What is Mabon?
Mabon (pronounced May-bon, May-bone or MAH-bawn), also known as the Harvest Home and Alban Elved, occurs around September 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and March 21st in the Southern Hemisphere. Mabon marks the time of the year when the days and nights become equal again. Mabon marks the completion of the harvest when the field is cleared of its bounty. This continues the metaphor of the god’s journey; with Mabon we prepare for his death and his journey into the unseen.
Mabon marks the beginning of Autumn and is a reminder that Winter’s cold touch is not far off. Mabon is a time of celebrating the harvest. It is a time of either finishing up the last of the harvest or kicking up our feet to relax, enjoying the fruits of our labor. The Full Moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox is the Harvest Moon. Magickally it is a time for balance, removing guilt, love, and acceptance. Mabon is also a celebration of the Dark Mother. A celebration of aspects of the Goddess that we may not always enjoy, but it doesn’t detract from the fact it exists in us all. A perfect time to dive into Shadow Work.
