Imbolc Correspondence

What is Imbolc?

Imbolc, pronounced IM-bulk or Em-Bolk, is derived from the Gaelic world oimelc; meaning “in the belly,” a reference to the womb of mother earth. Imbolc is traditionally celebrated on February 1st-2nd. It marks the center point of the dark half of the year, a promise that spring is around the corner. It marks the beginning of the lambing season and signals the beginning of Spring and the stirrings of new life. Imbolc is considered the festival of the Maiden and is celebrated as such until March 21st.

Imbolc is traditionally considered sacred to Brigid. She was the queen and mother goddess of many Ancient European tribes, and therefore, during the time of the Maiden, she is celebrated.

Bonus: Here’s a recipe from last year on how to make an easy Braided Bread
