This is my first tarot review!
And I am so excited to do it because it is for a deck I love so much- Neon Moons Tarot, as per your requests on Instagram!
Listen every once and a while, a tarot deck just… gets me. I am after all a multifaceted human. One of my favorite sub-genres in both movies and novels are ones about dystopian futures. This deck sums that up perfectly. It somehow captures Blade Runner, meets the Repo Genetic Opera vibes perfectly. Which I can understand how complicated that example can seem, but it works.
The Neon Moon Tarot was created by James Brothwell of Pixel Occult. The deck was originally launched on Kickstarter last February which to no one’s surprise, did incredibly well! James has now had three successful decks fund through Kickstarter, his most recent is an oracle deck called the Aborabyssal Oracle. Although he has been heavily hinting at another tarot deck launching soon, which I look forward to, as his teasers have been stunning!
These cards are around standard size and measure at 2.75” x 4.75” and come in a stunning hard box to match. Something that I value highly over a card pocket box. But that’s my preference.
The first thing I adore about this deck (aside from the obvious artwork), is his reinvention of the suits. Sticking with the dystopian theme, his suits are as followed:
- Vials= Cups
- Arms= Swords
- Zents= Pentacles
- Wires= Wands
He has also reinvented the monarchy of the suits, to fit the dystopian theme.
- Apprentice= Page
- Agent= Knight
- Supervisor= Queen
- Executive= King
To put it plainly James has completely kept on theme for this entire deck and the care shows.
A few bonuses for this deck:
James has invented (I believe… I’ve never seen or heard of it before) a game that goes with his deck. So let’s say you don’t love or know a thing about tarot, but love this deck. The game included makes it possible to make this deck still worth buying, even if you couldn’t give one heck about tarot.
He also has a tutorial on his Instagram, to make the edges of your decks hot pink. Continuing to fit the theme of the deck! Sure it’s a little work, but if having bright pink edges is something you are interested in, then this is the tutorial for you!
